Synagogue Montefiore: From Blueprint to Sculpture
Synagogue Montefiore in Las Vegas, New Mexico holds the distinction of being the first synagogue in the state. Despite extensive remodeling over the years, it still stands today — a testament to the enduring Jewish community in the American Southwest.
A Unique Subject
Most of my work focuses on Catholic churches and missions, but this synagogue called to me because of its remarkable history. Originally relocated from its initial site and placed on the campus of Highlands University, where it served as a Catholic Newman Center for a time, the building was later reacquired by the Jewish community and continues to function as an active synagogue.
24 Steps to Completion
This sculpture was documented extensively throughout the building process. From the initial layout on the workbench, through the rough carving of the form, the addition of architectural details, and finally the painting — each stage reveals something about how a building’s character emerges from raw material.
The Drawer Collage
PJ Cardinale created the drawer assemblage for this piece, incorporating elements that reflect the synagogue’s unique history — a building that has served multiple faiths and communities throughout its life.
Working Drawing
A pencil and ink working drawing for this sculpture is also available in the exhibition, showing the architectural plans that guided the carving process.
